86 players bid our friend and great club man, John King, farewell today. Our best wishes to John and our thanks to him for his contribution to the club.
Today’s winners with 45 points were Josh Hall and Michael Thomas. A stunning 30 of the stick on the back nine helped them beat Peter Hartigan and Trevor Moss on a countback.
John Dumont and Alan Kuhne took out 3rd prize with 44 points.
Tuesday the 18th of April was the final round of the Tuesday Championship. With the best two stableford scores of three rounds counting towards the final score.

But Today, the third Tuedsay, three players hit 39 points and the mix was bound to change.
Unfortunately for Geoff, he didn’t improve on his current scores and had a nervous wait to see if anyone bettered his score.
Best previous rounds were scored by Joe Lowell and Andy Bassett with 39 points, and both were in the box seat to come from behind on such a great day for golf.
Joe rounded off today with a 30 as his second best round leaving him short of Geoff’s mark, and I struggled today with 12 points on the front after starting on the 18th. I came home well and had scored 20 points on the back 8 holes leading onto the last being the 17th. After a strong drive on the final 17th hole I could see a ray of sunshine and that Championship title within reach after the tragedy on the front nine.
The hand of fate then reached out and slapped me as my second shot clipped those trees on the left of the 17th leaving me short of the green, I cruelled my chip and after putting above the hole, paid the penalty by having my final putt run past the hole for a wipe.
But I new 32 was enough to inch past Geoff’s old score. It was just a matter of waiting for all the cards to fall now.
The cards came in, Norm Hughes had a great 39 points but was only backed up by a 27 which left him short of the title. My playing partner Nathan Wardle crafted a lovely 39 also with a big back nine to take the $1.00, also only had a 29 to add to his score which left him short, and with only three cards to come in, I was looking good again with that nett total of 71.
The last card in was another great 39 from Denis Wallace, our Division 5 Pennant Captain and all round Mr Consistency. I checked his other two rounds and saw he had a 31, which I had covered, but his first round was a 33, giving Denis the title of Tuesday Champion for 2017 with a total of 72.
Congratulations again to Denis for a well earned come from behind title.
That’s the best part of this Championship, it’s never over till it’s over.
The other great feature of this event was to see Wendy Anne Parker finish strongly with a 35 finishing equal third. Let’s hope Wendy’s outcome encourages more Women to join in next year.

On a very enjoyable day for golf the Best Round of the Day was played by Gerard Mooney with 43 points. The sharp shooter of the day was Tony Gedye taking both nearest the pins.

With two rounds completed of the Men’s Tuesday Plate, and 88 players having played across the last two Tuesday’s, things are hotting up with Geoff McDonald clinging onto a one stroke lead with a Best Two Round total of 69 points.
Following closely behind is Terry Grace with 68 points and then a gaggle of other players within striking distance.
With the format being Best two Rounds of Three, this event always goes down to the wire on the last round, which is next Tuesday 16th April. There are at least 64 players who could slip past Geoff’s current score should any one of them shoot the best score of the two rounds so far, which has been a very handy 39 points.
With 45 players having put in only one score in the first two rounds, I am expecting it will be a full field next Tuesday to have a go at the title. 26 degree’s and sunny I hear, what a day for golf.

Divisions 3 & 4 were due to play at Leongatha GC on Sunday 9th but all matches were postponed to be replayed on the 23rd April (as I understand at this time).
As Men’s Captain, I was Starter on the day and ultimately responsible for the decision to postpone the LGC matches, and as we know the day turned out to be quite a nice day for golf, nevertheless I stand by my decision and support Denis Stanes, the SGDGA Secretary, for his decision to postpone the whole round. From what I have heard the other host Clubs were reporting very similar conditions.
Denis told me that he was getting a bit of stick over the postponement so to placate some of those disgruntled golfers, should they read our website, I offer the the following as way of explanation of Sunday’s decision.
Hindsight is wonderful but it rarely melds well with caution, which I prefer to err on the side of.
I examined the Course before the start of play. Despite constant rain and squalls overnight and leading up to the start, the Course was in good nick with some bunkers carrying water and inundations on the usual lower lying greens, but very playable especially as the rain was clearing and a good breeze was blowing.
My biggest concern was the amount of lightning I had encountered in the vicinity of the Course that morning. Whilst there was a lifting of the rain and breaks before the next rain band according to the radar we were watching, the Bureau of Meteorology forecast was for continuing thunderstorms and lightning for the rest of the morning and later in the day.
Whilst you can keep a weather eye open for rain and storms, lightning can strike when the conditions suit and it’s too late after the event if someone was struck, to call play off and to postpone the rest of the match.
If I want to know if the Course is ready to play, I rely on the professionals, our Green Keeper Dylan for the Course and the BoM for the weather. The lightning risk was real and present and underpinned the decision.

77 players played in some tough windy conditions. Best score of the Day went to Jason Dennerley with a good score of 36 points on c/b. The B-Grade winner was Neale Gillin with 35 points. Allan Schache won C-Grade with a good score of 36.

In magnificent weather 34 women played for the April Monthly Medal, kindly sponsored by Louise Schache.Toni West shot 77 off the stick ,her lowest score ever on our Red course to win the Monthly Medal . Her score was 77- 10 nett 67. Well done Toni, that was just brilliant. Toni was also the winner of A Grade with her nett 67 . It was no surprise that Toni also won the putting with 27 putts. Scratch event this month was for B Grade players and the winner was Marg Griffiths with 102. Marg was also the B Grade handicap winner with a nett score of 74 from her 28 handicap. Sue Bowler was C Grade winner 102 – 31 – 71 nett. Nearest the pin 4th Toni West 12.5m and 16th Louise Schache 4.75m
Seven players took part in the 9 hole comp on the front 6 of the Green Course. The winner was Marion Chalmers with 21 points on a count back from Gwen Chapman

Sunday 2nd April was a good day for LGC Pennant Teams with all three Divisions scoring wins.
Div 2 played Phillip Island at Meeniyan and won by 4 Matches to 3 with Chris Leaver and Russell Williams each winning 1 up , Tom Sorell 5/4 up and Michael O’Keefe 7/6 up. Tom Williamson lost a close one on the 17th ,Matt Bowey was beaten 3/2 and Leroy Sharrock lost his match 5/4.
Div 3 played at Wonthaggi against Woorayl and won 5 matches to 2. Grant McRitchie and Nathan Wardle both won their matches on the 18th hole, Brendan Simon won 2/1, Colin Bear won 5/3 up, and Peter Dowling won 7/6. Bruce Hutton went down 5/4 and Luke Drummond went down 8/7.
Div 5 played at Lang Lang against Welshpool and won 6 matches to 1. Denis Wallace and Keith Finney both won 1 up, Tim McCarty won 3/2 up, Alex and Nick Hill each won 4/3 up and John McLennan won 5/3 up. Michael Oliver went down 3/2 in a close tussle.
The Captains are happy they have full teams and the results reflect the closeness of the competitions.
