Primary Schools Local Qualifier at Leongatha

Leongatha Golf Club hosted 21 young primary school children for a Stage 1 Primary Schools qualifying event.  There are 3 stages to progress, local through to regional to be held at Warragul and then the State Final to be held at Kooringal.  Two local Members progressed to the next stage in Beau Elkin and Louis Read.  Two names for us to watch closely in the future.  Well done boys!

Men’s & Women’s 36 Hole Leongatha Open Amateur

50 locals and visitors contested the 2018 edition of the Leongatha Open Amateur.  Players were greeted with a golf course in tremendous condition and ideal weather.  This golf course continues to test the abilities of some of the best young golfers in the state.  Leongatha member Anthony Sparkes took out the AM nett event playing off 10 with a nett 70.  Another local in Andrew Henley had the second best afternoon nett score with 71 playing off 14.  This paved the way for Rik De Longville from Commonwealth Golf Club to win the 36 hole nett event with 149 playing off a handicap of 2.  Rik stormed home with a scratch score of 71 in the afternoon.

The women’s field had just the 3 competitors this year, but 3 very good competitors in Keeley Marx (h’cap 2) from the Heritage, local member Rebecca Thomas (h’cap 5) & Kingston Heath member Ashleigh Hall (h’cap +1).  Ashleigh proved too consistent over the 36 holes taking out the title with 156.  The men’s 36 hole scratch event went to Victoria GC’s Lewis Schenk by 5 shots from his nearest competitors with a total of 147.  Lewis had the best AM score with 72 and cruised home in front of Phillip Island’s Mark Boulton (152) and Royal Melbourne’s David Shimmin (152).

Thanks once again to all competitors and we look forward to welcoming you back to Leongatha Golf Club in the future.

Working Bee Re-Turf’s the corner of the 18th fairway.

Well done to the dozen volunteers that turned out to lay the turf on the 18th fairway which had been prepared by Dylan & Dennis on Wednesday.  Timing is everything with these events as if we left the repair until after the coming major events, it would likely be too dry and hot for the turf to root in as easily.  The area is roped off to ensure carts use the left hand side of the fairway and green.  The newly turfed area’s are marked as GUR (compulsory) and relief will be taken at the nearest point, no closer to the green, as per Rule 25-1.

Cart users, when travelling from the 18th green to the 1st hole, please travel behind the 18th green as close to the tree line as possible and then approach the first tee along the bitumen path.
