Yarra Yarra Golf Club v Leongatha Golf Club Ladies Challenge Friday November 4th 2016

This event was the brain child of Bec Thomas & Yarra Yarra Ladies Captain Andree Leigh. Twenty women travelled to Leongatha to play 4 BBB stableford against 20 LGC women. The day began with a delicious lunch, our thanks to Ros, Wendy Brown & others too numerous to mention. Josh & Shirley also welcomed Yarra’s Manager & Course Superintendent Peter & Ross who played golf with Josh. The beautiful annual / perpetual trophy, a silver plate etched with the Club emblems of Yarra Yarra & Leongatha. This was housed in a glass fronted wooden container. Despite the warmer weather, afternoon play & gale force winds, a great day was had by all. After play we enjoyed delicious finger food & fruit. Home ground advantage ( Yarra Yarra is quite flat)  saw Leongatha Golf Club victorious.  The gauntlet has well and truly been thrown down as Yarra Yarra play host to us next year. They are out for revenge.

The individual event for the day was won by Marg Griffiths  & Pat Pease with 43 stableford points

Runners Up were Dot Stubbs & Lianne Adamson with 39 points

The aggregate team  scores were LGC 356 points & Yarra Yarra 326 points.

It was a great day, thoroughly evident by the level of noise in the clubhouse . Congratulations to Women’s Captain Shirley Welsford for all the preparation she put into making sure the event was a success. Well done Shirley, you did our Club proud.

Star Medalist Playoff – Saturday 5th November 2016

Today was also the Star Medalist playoff for the monthly medal winners from November 2015 to October 2016. With only 3 strokes between all Monthly Medal winners as recorded during the year, the Star Medalist playoff was set to be a close tussle. The deciding factor seemed to be mother nature who unleashed a day of showers, strong gusting winds and even patches of sunshine.

In a close battle Terry Chipman is this year’s Star Medalist with a round of  92 off the stick and a handicap of 20, Terry had a nett 72, one shot clear of Jason Dennerley on nett 73 and Denis Wallace and David Forbes on nett 74.

Well done to Terry.

Today was our last day to qualify for the BJS Insurance Top Gun Shootout which is to be held this Sunday, 6th November, tee off at 09.00 am.

A likely lad who has had a number of top notch scores in recent weeks but who hadn’t entered the Top Gun event, paid his $10 entry fee today, because he had a good feeling in his bones.

Unfortunately for Paul Luck, I think it may have been arthritis, as he ended up with 26, about 11 points short of qualifying.  But what a clubman.

Better news for local farmer Antony Roberts who pulled out his best round of the qualifying season to leapfrog from position ranking 34 at 8.00am to position ranked No 1 at the end of the day, after shooting a great 40 points.

A little sad news after one of the three lady qualfiers, and perenial Top Gun finalist, Coral Gray announced she had to withdraw from the shootout as she was carrying an injury.  Well done for making the final Coral, get well soon and hope to see you again in the mix for Top Gun 2017.

Bad news for Coral but good news for Denis Wallace who was squeezed out of the final today by Tony Roberts, and now he rises again, like Phoenix, into the Top 19.

The below list is the Top Gun Shoot Out Top 19.  If your name is on the list and you can’t play in the Top Gun please let Andy Bassett know so the next ranked qualifiers can be notified in plenty of time. (1-Frank Gill, 2-Brett Windsor and 3- Alan Edney)

D & N Webster Mixed American Foursomes Tuesday 1 Nov 2016

On a gusty spring day 19 teams competed in the D & N  Webster Mixed American Foursomes event. I witnessed some great golf from the eventual joint runners up, Dot and Merv Stubbs, no better than when Dot birdied the 10th by chipping in from 100 metres out.

The winners on the day were no strangers to success as a pair, with Rebecca Wilson and Glenn Marsham once again turning on some great golf to record a nett 70.875.

It was good to see sponsors of the day, Noreen and David Webster looking so well and we all thank them again for their long support of the Club, especially the running of this event.  The winners and runners up were presented with wines and chocolates and down the line teams received boxes of chocolates, but unfortunatley, the chocolates were all gone before they got down to 90.5.

Nearest the Pins:

Tony Roberts on the 14th (1.65m )                               3 Balls

Ross McRoberts on the 16th (4.55m)                           3 balls

For those who chose not to play in the Mixed event, we also ran a Stableford event as well and some very high scores were returned. (see the seperate post).

The Golf was complemented with a glass of champagne and a lovely lunch with the running of a number of Melbourne Cup Sweeps. A noisy crowd enjoyed the running of the Cup viewed on the big screen, certainly none more than Graham (“Roudy”) Spruzen who managed to pull the winner in three of the  nine sweeps.

I can say we had a terrific day and I highly recommend that you put this day on your ‘must do’ calander, for next year.

Golf Vic U18 Junior Pennant-Rnd 2 Sunday 30/10/2016

South Gippsland – v – Sandhurst Round 2.

The final result (4-2 Sandhurst over South Gippsland) suggests a dominant Team victory by the visitors to Lang Lang Golf Course today but in reality a win to South Gippsland or draw, just slipped through our fingers.

Debutante LGC golfer Miles Wrigley lined up today for us and performed well under pressure of his lack of experience, yet held his own, winning the tricky 8th and squaring a couple against a “seasoned” opponent before going down 8/7. This round will hold him in good stead for next week’s game.

Regular dynamo Will Christensen played solid golf all day in a see sawing match against a big hitter before getting pipped on the 18th as another putt slipped past the hole, going down by 1.

Charley McKenna led all day playing great steady golf and held off a very good golfer to win 1up.

Joel Brann was a little wayward early and chased all day against a very accurate opponent who one putted most greens. Joel went down 5/3.

So being 3-1 and with the final pairings not only battling each other but severe gales that blew in, Charlie May continued yestereday’s A grade winning form at Lang Lang to outplay his opponent to finish 3 up.

Which brings us to the final pairing between Miss Kai Shipp (0.5) and Alex Geyer (9.0).  Alex started off  the match with the putting yips and Kai was soon 4 holes up.  Alex fought back over the back nine to be square at the 17th and with a shot on the 18th, was looking for a good tee shot.

Both played suberb drives and then the nerves took over.  Both eventually on for three before those yips returned and the win, then draw slipped by the hole and turned into a win for Kai, Alex 1 down and the match 4-2. A great finish for the day.

Next week’s 3rd Round is at home (Lang Lang GC) against Cranbourne, tee off at 1.30pm.
