Men’s Pennant Final Results – Sunday 22nd May, 2016

I am delighted to announce that all three of our Pennant teams were successful in their finals today. All four divisional finals were played at Korumburra today in good weather for golfing.

Our Div 2 team took on Wonthaggi and struggled early. At the half way mark we were behind in most of the 7 matches, and even after 15 holes things did not look good. A 5-2 or 4-3 loss looked a likely result. However, to their great credit our guys dug deep to level the match 3-each and with Captain Tom Sorrell and his opponent on the 18th hole, Tom only needed to halve the hole for him to win and for the team to win 4-3. Tom’s opponent fought hard to the finish and was on the front edge of the green for 2 on the par 5 18th, while Tom’s second shot missed the green left and ran down the hill some 20 metres. A brilliant chip saw Tom recover to about 1.5 metres for the pin. His opponent 2 -putted and Tom calmly tapped in the putt to square the hole and for his team to win 4-3! Well done to all involved, it was a great effort.

Div 3 played Meeniyan, and strong performances from Peter Dowling, Brendan Simon, Bryan Sword and Ben Ferrari-Mela saw us win 4-3 also. Brendan went through the entire season undefeated, winning all 6 round matches he played in and his final match. A tremendous achievement!

Div 4 played Wonthaggi, and another close encounter ensued. At the completion of 18 holes, we had 3 wins in the bag from the 5 matches decided at that point, with 2 matches going to extra holes. Bryan McCorkell squared the 19th with his opponent, while Dan Poynton cracked his tee  shot to within half a metre on the downhill par 3 10th hole. Dan calmly tapped in his birdie put to clinch the win! Having seen this happen, Bryan and his opponent called it quits and headed for the bar!

Our guys may well have created Club history today. Bruce Hutton, a member of our div 2 team this year and pennant player at our Club for the past 45 years, cannot recall us winning 3 pennants in a single year. He can recall 2 pennants several times, but never 3. Each player who played pennant for us this year, not just those that played today,  can be justifiably proud of this achievement! It was a great team effort.

I was absolutely delighted to observe the good sportsmanship our players showed and the good-natured way the games were played right throughout the season and today. It bought great credit to yourselves and our club.

On behalf those who played today I would also like to thank those people who supported our players, some even caddying for them. The players really appreciated your support.

As well as congratulating all players, I would particularly like to thank the captains, Tom  Sorrell, Chris Indian and Andy Bassett/Colin Bear, who worked hard behind the scenes to ensure that we were able to field 3 teams each week. Also the excellent on-course leadership set high standards that your teams followed.

2016 Esplanade Hotel Super League Round 6 Results – Sunday 22nd May, 2016

The 6th round of the Esplanade Hotel Inverloch 2016 Super League was completed on Saturday with some very close results in key matches:

  • In a clash between two of the leading teams, the undefeated Hawks (137, Paul Luck 37, Peter Waters 34, Jon Smith and Ian Watson 33) saw off the Cats (136, Ian Barlow 35, Doug Clemann and George Misson 34) by the barest possible margin.
  • The Blues (123, John Eabry 37, Frank Smedley 31) just held on for a win over the Dogs (122, Bec Thomas 33, Andy Bassett 32).
  • Just like in the AFL, the Pies (134, Neil Mackenzie 38, Denis Wallace and Andrew Smith 33) suddenly struck form and easily accounted for the Demons (124, Peter Hobson 33, Gordon Morrison 31).
  • The Tigers (134, Marg Griffiths 35, Fred deBondt and Norm Hughes 34) trounced the Saints (111, Chris Leaver 33).

With the final regular season round being played this week, two teams -Hawks and Cats- are assured on a finals spot, while three other teams -Tigers, Dog and Blues – are fighting it out for the remaining two finals berths.

With a great round of 38 points, Neil Mackenzie was the winner of the Esplanade Hotel Voucher for the round.

ROUND 5 SUPER LEAGUE RESULTS

Round 5 Super League Results:

With weather conditions as they were earlier in the week, low scores were very common.

As the weather improved so did the results, but this week  the only moves on the ladder were Dogs and Blues displacing Tigers on percentage, but Tigers still ahead of Blues  on points.

Due to the lack of singles Ambrose games this week for round 6, Captain Peter and myself have decided to run round six (6) over the next two weeks and thus extending the competition for an extra week to make up for the lose of this week.

3rd Round of Tuesday Championship- 26 April 2016

On this beautiful autumn day, 58 players engaged in the final round of the Tuesday Championship.  A late charge by Bruce Gibson with 41 points didn’t see him catch Michael Thomas who recorded a best 2 of 3 rounds total of 77  points (41 and 36) to clinch the Tuesday Championship title. Well done Mick!

Doug Clemann on 72 points  was runner up with Leroy Sharrock, Bill Bittleman and Joe Lowell a further two shots behind on 70 points.   Frank Gill and Mick Oliver were another shot behind on 69 points.

Tuesday Results

Attention Super League Players

Round 3, presently being played, has been affected by some unfortunate scheduling of events that has left several Super League teams short of players posting scores so far:

  • Several men played Vets at Wonthaggi on Tuesday and Thursday’s event is an Ambrose. Saturday sees the completion of the McCaughan 4BBB Par event.
  • Similarly, some ladies were playing in the Cashin Trophy matchplay event yesterday and did not post an individual stableford score.

Given the shortage of scores in so far and in an attempt to have round 3 completed this week, we have decided to allow individual scores from the 4BBB events scheduled for Saturday. We note that there are many Super League players, both men and ladies playing on Saturday and we are hopeful that their individual scores will result in most, if not all teams having 4 players post a score by Saturday night. In addition to your team MiClub card, please collect an “old” Leongatha card for each Super League player and have a marker score your round as an individual par round. After your round on Saturday please put your individual card in the wooden scorecard box near the MiClub card reader.

Good scoring!!!
