2016 BJS Insurance Top Gun Event

TG-header      copy-copy-LGC-logo_Web_150.png

Thanks to the continuing generous sponsorship from BJS Insurance, the 2016 Leongatha Golf Club TOP GUN event will once again be held soon:

What is it?

The 2016 Top Gun Shootout is an individual elimination handicap event. The schedule consists of qualifying period and a final where the top 19 qualifiers shoot it out for the main prizes.

What are the prizes?

Prize money is $250 for the winner, $100 for the runner-up and $50 for the third placed player.

Who is eligible for the Shootout?

All Leongatha Golf Club members who have playing rights at the club including male and female members are eligible to qualify for the event. Qualifying is based on your best score recorded during the qualifying period from any singles stroke, stableford or par event. This will be converted to stableford points for determining the top 19 stableford scores for the 19 qualifying positions. Normal count-back rules apply. The qualifying period runs from Tuesday August 2nd 2016 and finishes on Thursday November 3rd 2016.

How do you determine the winner?

On the day of the Final, 19 (Sunday 6th November) players tee off together. Players will play off their handicap of that day according to the tees in use on the day. One player with the lowest stableford score is eliminated on each hole. A chip off will determine a result per hole should several players have the same low stableford score. Eventually, you will have 2 players coming down the 18th to win the Shootout. Should both players post the same score occur on the 18th, a chip off will be used to determine the winner.

Is there a cost to qualify?

Yes. It is a once off cost of $10 and once paid, you can attempt to qualify as many times as you like after you have paid the entry fee.

What do I need to do to qualify?

Pay your $10 at the Proshop any time before you start to qualify. Please ensure you name is added to the registration sheet in the Proshop. Your name will be recorded as a competitor and your scores will be reviewed for qualifying purposes after each card is returned. A live leader board will also be available in the clubhouse. As mentioned, you can qualify as many times as you like during this period. Your best score will determine your place in the rankings. Remember, the top 19 only play off in the final.

When is the Final played?

The Final will be on Sunday 6th of November 2016. Tee off will be at 9 am sharp. Should a qualifier be unable to attend, reserves may be called up according to normal count-back rules.

The committee reserves the right to adjudicate on any issue that may arise during the running of the event.

An Entry Sheet has been placed in the foyer of the Clubhouse. Please pay your $10 entry fee at the counter and put your name and date paid on the entry sheet.

The Cats team were this year’s premiers, defeating the previously undefeated Hawks team, 138 to 131 in the final. Members of the winning Cats team included, Doug Clemann, Wendy Parker, Colin Bear, Coral Gray, Neale Gillin, Ian Barlow, George Misson and Jim Arnott, and each player received a Club voucher. Ian Barlow received a voucher from The Esplanade Hotel as winner of the best player of the final win an excellent 38 points. Along with the team awards for the Premiers and runners-up, there was also an individual component for the best male and female players throughout the regular season. This year the Club named these awards in honour of our husband and wife dual life Members, Col and Nancy Sperling who were on hand to make the presentations. A Brownlow Medal-style voting system was used to award points for each round, with the Nancy Sperling women’s award going to the consistent Wendy Parker (Cats) who won from Bec Thomas and Marg Griffiths (see below). The Col Sperling Men’s award went to Men’s Captain Peter Waters who won on count back from last year’s winner John Eabry and Club President Chris Leaver (see below).

2016 Esplanade Hotel Super League Final Result

With the Cats holding a 4 shot lead going into the final day yesterday (leading 133 to 129), the Hawks certainly had the job ahead of them to match their score.  They tried hard, but failed to do that. Only Jon Smith and Ian Watson  were able to improve on their previous scores for the Hawks, and they posted a final team score of 131.

The Cats put the issue beyond doubt by having Doug Clemann post a 33 to take them to 135, and Colin Bear rubbed salt into the Hawk’s wounds by then cruising around for another 33 to give the Cats a final team score of 138! Well done Cats, you performed well when it counted – in the final!!!

The Final scoreboard was as follows:

Hawks Jon Smith 31 || 33 Doug Clemann Cats
Toni West 30 || 34 Wendy Parker
Joe Lowell 34 || 33 Colin Bear
Jan Brownlie 34 || 28 Coral Gray
Keith Godridge 26 || 29 Neale Gillin
Peter Waters 30 || 38 Ian Barlow
Ian Watson 32 || George Misson
Paul Luck 29 || 30 Jim Arnott
Best 4 131 || 138 Best 4

Congratulations also go to Ian Barlow who posted the best score in the final by far, with a fine 38 points! In fact, Ian posted the best 2 scores of the final by also posting a 35 point score after he had dropped a shot in handicap! Ian wins a Voucher from the Esplanade Hotel Inverloch for his fine effort.

We remind you that we will be having a cerebratory dinner at the club this coming Friday 24th June to celebrate the completion of the 2016 Esplanade Hotal Super League. We hope to see you all at the event! In addition to the winners and runners up receiving their prizes, the Col and Nancy Sperling Awards, for the best Male and Female players of the regular season will be announced.

Finally, our thanks go to Dylan Clark of the Esplanade Hotel Inverloch for generously sponsoring the event this year. The vouchers Dylan provided were used to reward the best player from each of the 7 regular season rounds, and the 2 finals rounds and added significant interest to the event.

Thanks also go to George Misson who helped me keep the scores during the event. It is not a simple matter to keep tabs on 64 players during the regular season, particularly when they play as often as Wendy Parker did! George missed the final due to work commitments, but I can assure you kept a close eye on proceedings, emailing me regulalry duing the past fortnight.

We hope that you enjoyed the event. We plan to make this, and Top Gun regular events at the Club, but need your continuing support to do so. We plan to run Super League earlier in the year next year, probably from March to May, so that we can have it completed in good weather.
