Monday night – 5 hole golf

The 5 hole concept on a Monday night is proving to be a popular event.  The Fennessy sausages are gaining a strong following and the ideal weather conditions have helped a little bit too.

The Jason Day Team won the night on a countback from a couple of unlucky groups.  Congratulations to Beau Elkin, his father Rod and teammates Lynda Bassett and Nan Meagher.

Beau (our 7 year old star) also had the best score of the night with a nett score of 13.

Lesley Renwick was the best of the female participants and won the women’s competition with nett 19.

George Misson got lucky when Beau drew his name for the Mystery Draw.  Congratulations George.

Monday 5 hole Golf resumes in two weeks (November 27).  Members and non-members are welcome to join the growing movement and enjoy a Fennessy two-snag treat.

Good golfing

Top Gun final

Congratulations to Andrew Smith who is the 2017 Top Gun winner after an exciting Sunday of tense and thrilling golf.

Andy prevailed over the very solid John McLennan after a chip-off on the 18th hole.  John’s putt on the 18th lipped the cup denying him of victory.  Andy’s top-notch chip over the bunker in the “chip-off” sealed the deal.

Ken Smirk fought hard to finish third and was the “champion of the chip-off” surviving 6 chip-offs before falling out of the playoff on the 17th.

Peter Waters (16th hole), George Misson (15th hole) and Denis Wallace (14th hole) rounded out the top 6 and played excellent golf to get through to the closing holes.

Neale Gillin stitched up the prestigious Pop Gun award after being pipped in the first hole chip-off.

Club Championship – Round 2

After a very impressive 75 today Chris Leaver has a 5 shot lead after two rounds of the Club Championship.  With a two round total of 157, Chris lead Mick McGrath on 162, with Matt Bowey, Rod Mackenzie, Malcolm Gin and Marcus Luscombe also within striking distance..  Next week’s final round is shaping up as a down-to-the-wire affair.

B grade is also looking like a tight contest with Doug Clemann holding a narrow lead over last year’s winner Kevin Castwood, with Andrew Smith, Peter Walsh, Ian Murchie and Alan Kuhne not too far behind.

C grade leader is Frank Gill.  Ron Findlay is only two shots behind.  Andy Bassett, John Eabry, Bert Borg and Nick Shaw round out the top 6 and are only one solid round away from glory.

D grade sees Ted Rudge holding onto to his round 1 lead with Ian Debenham, Fred Debono, Ted Bruinewood, Colin Moyle ans Don ald Smith rounding out the top 6.

All of these players are in the seeded draw for next week’s final round.  Good luck to all.

Amalgamation of Men’s and Women’s Golf Associations In South Gippsland

It was indeed a historic night for golf in South Gippsland at Woorayl Golf Club last night, Tuesday 17th October. At separate special general meetings of both the South Gippsland women’s and men’s golfing associations, a resolution to amalgamate women’s and men’s golf was unanimously passed. In doing so South Gippsland became the 14th of the 17 golfing districts in Victoria to amalgamate.

At the inaugural meeting of the newly amalgamated body – now known as South Gippsland Golf Incorporated – the following Office Bearers were deemed elected in accord with the new constitution as there was exactly the same number of nominees as positions available. What are the odds of that happening!

  • President: Irene Holm (Meeniyan)
  • Vice President: Bruce Hutton (Leongatha)
  • Secretary: Steve Rose (Korumburra)
  • Treasurer: Toni West (Leongatha)
  • Chairperson of Match: Chris Clements (Korumburra)
  • Ordinary Members: Lee Clements (Korumburra) and Denis Stanes (Wonthaggi?)

I take this opportunity on behalf of all members of LGC, to both congratulate and thank Toni and Bruce for nominating for these positions and accepting their election to them. We wish them well in their important roles.

The above Executive Committee is charged with the responsibility of guiding the direction of and fostering the sport of golf in our region, not the actual running of men’s and women’s golf events such as Pennant. No doubt they will be soon on the lookout for some “troops” to do the hackwork of running golf in this region within operational areas such as Marketing and Publicity, Electronic Media, Match Committees and Game Development. I urge you to consider volunteering to help if you feel you have the talents they require as it is important that we make this amalgamation a success and that we further the game of golf in this region.

As this amalgamation has only just taken place, you can expect little, if any change as to how men’s and women’s golf is run in district in the 2018 calendar year. However, it will be interesting to see just what developments and changes lie further ahead!

My thanks also go to Colleen Touzel for her work on the six-person steering committee that was formed to make this amalgamation happen. Having spent many hours in meetings of this committee with Irene, Lee and Denis, and knowing our “home grown” talent of Toni and Bruce, Colleen and I have every confidence that the new amalgamated association is in good hands.
