Sunday 23rd October was the opening of the Golf Vic Under 18 Junior Pennant Competition for 2016. Again this year a combined side of junior golfers from Leongatha, Lang Lang and Wonthaggi Golf Clubs have been entered under the team banner name of South Gippsland, and the team is playing in Region 5 this year.
Opponents include Patterson River, Settlers Run, Sandhurst Eagles, Cranbourne and The National.
Our first game was against Patterson River who hosted the game. For those who don’t know the Course it is a beautiful layout, full of undulating fairways, water courses and large bunkers. Acurracy is important in your game here and knowing when to lay up often pays dividends.
The Patterson River team has a handicap range from their No. 1 player Kasey Cathcart (1) through to their number 6, Pheonix Diaz (just 7 years of age) off 32 (a rising star of the future).
Our SG Team, comprised Charlie May (13) our No. 1 through to Jessica Harry our No. 6 off 41.
The Matches were played in great spirit and some awesome golf was played with the overall contest going down to the last putt of the day by PR (and our) Ryan Thomas, which slid past the hole and given the next shot, halved the 18th, which gave SG Will Christensen a win 1 up to make the final matches score 4-2 to South Gippsland.
Results:
Patterson River – v – South Gippsland
Kasby Cathcart (1) d Charlie May (13)7/6
Matty Edwards (5) lost to Jacob Taberner (19) 3/1
Josh Kelly (13) lost to Charlie McKenna (21) 2/1
Ryan Thomas (15) lost to Will Christensen (23) 1 up.
Mitchell Woods (26) d Oscar Harry(31) 2 up.
Pheonix Diaz (32) lost to Jessica Harry (41) 6/5.
Well done to all.
There are only twelve (12) days left in which to score better than par to force your way into the Top 19 qualifying positions for the BJS Insurance Top Gun Shootout, which is to be held on Sunday 6th November.
A couple of old Top Gun hands Kev Castwood (37) and Andy Bassett (38) have finally come to the fore this week to squeeze their way into the final on current scores, which is now set at 37 points.
Nine players are precariously poised on 37 points, only seperated by countback with the minimum back nine score of 16 points.
With the forecast of better weather for this week, it’s not too late to get out and play your best Top Gun round to qualify.

On a cold and windy day, a small field found the fairways slow and greens soft. Best score of 38 points has also changed the shootout field in the BJS Insurance Top Gun event due to be held on Sunday the 6th November.
Remember today’s final round of the Club Championship will be played next Saturday (29th) so please ensure you check the sheet on line for the seeded draws.

After another week of rain and no carts on the course, a good field of 46 golfers turned out today to enjoy the sunshine during a round of Par. The best round of the day was +1 by Kevin Castwood and that score was also good enough to put Kevin into the Top 19 Qualifiers for the BJS Insurance Top Gun shootout, which is due to be held on the 6th November.
The sad/happy story of the day belongs to the Men’s Captain who scored a three on the par 3 16th hole. Nothing special you might think, but he shanked his tee shot into the area of the big wombat hole in the bush between the 16th and 17th fairways, never to be seen again.
A bit sad that shot, but like all provisional balls they go better, with his next tee shot he aced the 16th. Didn’t even win a ball for nearest the pin. Just a + for 3 shots, and the pleasure of knowing it can be done. Alas, that illusive hole in one.

Round two of the Men’s Club Championship has been completed and the top of the leader board in each Division, is hotting up. In windy conditions today, there was only one par round and that was achieved by one of our up and coming juniors, Oscar Harry with a nett 70 off the stick and 36 stableford points. Unfortunately for Oscar he couldn’t play in the first round so is left wondering “what might have been”.
The six top players in each Division will be playing next Saturday in a seeded round, so watch the booking sheet for your times. All other player who are still in the Championships are open to book their own times. The Championships are still wide open, so good luck next weekend.
