SGD Juniors wow out of Golf Vic Junior Pennant

SGD Combined side wowed out of the finals.

Wow what a game on Sunday 6th December 2015.

After winning Section 7 of the Golf Victoria Junior Pennant and the right to play in the Quarter finals at Churchill Park Golf Club against the Kew Bears, SGD went into the contest as winners with nothing to lose. We had achieved more than we hoped in our first season and anything from here was a bonus well earned.
Each of our six players received shots with Kew Bears having low handicappers as 1,2,and 3 players (6,8 and 10 ) and our top half off 18, 20, and 31. The margins increased over the next three with Kew’s being 18,18 and 23 and SGD’s being 34,36,and 45. But we know in golf size doesn’t matter.
The games commenced on the 10th hole after a little debate on the order of play but the competition rules were to be followed and we were pleased that the high handicappers teed off first.
Jessica Harry (LGC)(45) and Oscar Harry (LGC)(36) both got off to good starts and Jessica was 2 up after two and held sway and as the day warmed up, so did her opponent and their match was square by the 15th with Jessica two down at the turn. Jessica went to 3 down after the 1st on the front nine but fought back in the hot conditions winning the next two holes to be one down at the 5th.  The match see-sawed until the 8th which her opponent won, and the match gone, down 2/1.
Oscar was up early by as much as four but his opponent wasn’t about to give up and finding greater accuracy off the tee and with his approach shots, soon had the match back to square at the turn. The front nine  was a tug-o- war and went down to the wire with neither being able to nail the game.
Approaching  the 9th and last hole, Oscar was three shots and over the back of the green with his opponent, also with three shots on the green, back right of the pin and with a difficult 7 metre down hill putt.  Oscar’s chip back onto the forward sloping green went through and into the bunker and although he got a shot on this hole, my knees were knocking.
But Oscar knew better, he pulled out his sand wedge and played the perfect bunker shot leaving a one metre putt which he holed in one, finishing with a 6 for this hole. His opponent’s first putt for the win, followed the contours two metres past and down hill from the hole. His second putt for the draw scorched the lip but rolled on and the match was won by Oscar, 1 up.
The next two off were Tim Boler (LGC)(34) and Jacob Taberner (Lang Lang)(31) and acting captain for the day.  Tim played a very accurate opponent who soon took advantage of  Tim’s wayward game and had Tim 7 down after 8 holes.
Tim was having one of those day’s us golfers know happens, but can’t explain why.  He was coming off 39 points the day before; he had been one of our strengths during the preliminary games, but alas today he couldn’t buy a good game.  All however wasn’t lost, and Tim found some form and won the 18th which sparked his confidence and he fought back to be 5 down at the 4th before succumbing at the 5th, 6 down /4 to play.
Jacob was unusually scratchy with his drives as well today but took an early lead to be two up by the 14th before his opponent fought back to square the game on the 16th.  A win on the 18th to Jacob saw him 1 up at the turn.
The match was tight on the front nine and the match square by the 5th.  Jacob’s tee shot on the par 3 – 6th  just trickled off the back of the green but that was fatal.  He uncharacteristically fluffed a couple of return chips and the hole was lost. He squared the 7th but the two tiered green on the 8th, which Jacob had to at least square, was his nemesis with 5 putts and the the game was gone, down 2/1.
At this stage, our Team prospects were looking doubtful with three losses and one win and and the No.1 and 2 players to come.
Last group No. 2-Alex Geyer (Wonthaggi)(20) playing his opponent off (8) and our No.1-Charlie May (Lang Lang)(18) playing his opponent off (6).
In a titanic battle Alex edged one up against his opponent and kept his foot on the pedal playing an array of drives from the majestic to a shocker or two; but his recoveries were solid and he never dwelled on his mistakes, taking the game 2 up into the turn.
On the front nine his opponent came backon the first with a win, but Alex continued to hold sway and his approaches to the green from some tricky lies, were superb.  His tee shot on the par 3-6th hole held a good position on the green and was a game breaker considering the wind was getting stiff at this stage, and he gained a three shot lead. Alex rounded the game off on the 7th winning 3/2 up.
Charlie May came into the contest after winning the monthly medal at Lang Lang the day before so wasn’t going to be intimidated by anyone.  Charlie got off to a geat start and was two up after two before his big hitting and adept opponent, fought back winning the next  5 of 6 holes. Charlie had a couple of wayward drives and maybe some nerves, and trailed at the turn two down.
On the front nine Charlie pulled out his A Game and played superbly squaring three holes and winning four making him two up with two holes to go coming into the 8th and getting a shot on that hole.
Both players had tricky approaches to the two tiered green with Charlie landing on the lower tier for 4 and his opponent landing on the upper tier, two metres from the hole also for 4.  Charlie’s first putt was short but managed to remain on the upper tier about 3 metres from the hole.
His opponent putted for the win to keep him in the game, but his ball slid past and he was given the next putt.  Charlie had to sink his putt to win the hole. With an expectant crowd of team mates, caddies, parents and friends around the green, Charlie carressed the ball straight up those 3,005 millimetres of the green and the ball dropped to the bottom of the cup, winning the match 2/1 up.
Wow the crowd went wild…well… we did and the other half clapped a great putt.
Once the scores were checked, it was official; we had a drawn match, 3 wins each. What an effort for our Team to take this Kew Team to a play off.
The next step was for each team to pick a player for the play off holes.  A hard decision for me as Alex finished their number two off convincingly, but I went for Charlie after Kew picked their No 1, and Charlie seemed to have the equal of him at that time.
The scene was set and the play off began. The crowd hadn’t gone and everyone was going to follow the boys down the 1st.
Down the 1st Charlie was left and his opponent right, both in trees.  Charlie punched out beautifully down the fairway and had a clear third shot onto the green which he did, leaving a 20 metre putt.  His opponent hit out of the tree’s on one side of the fairway and his ball finished under trees nearer the green but behind the bunker on the left of the fairway.
A superb chip from 50 metres, under the foliage and past and around the bunker put his ball onto the green, a metre behind Charlies’.  His first putt finished 2 metres short of the hole and Charlies first putt pulled up closer but still a metre short of the hole.
The Kew No. 1 then sank his 2 metre putt and threw his hand into the air in relief with recognition knowing he was safe and had at least drawn this first play off hole.
Charlie approached his putt and after careful preparation, made the putt but his ball eased past the lip of the cup and the match was lost by a millimetre. The table had turned.
Wow what a finish.
Well played to all, and good luck to Kew for the semi’s. (apologies for not having a copy of the Kew team list so I could refer to them by name)
I’m very proud of how our kids played throughout the tournament and particularly the finals.  Commiserations to those who were not in the finals team, especially Will Christensen who was the player of our season.
Many thanks to Mark Bowler for assisting with Manager duties and all the mums, dads and grandparents who helped out with getting the team to and through the games.
Also a big thanks to the Lang Lang Golf Club for hosting our home games and Ruth for staying back and looking after us on those home games.

Junior Pennant Round 5: SGD-V-Settlers Run 22Nov2015

Results of Round 5 played at Lang Lang GC.

Wow..what an exciting finish to this 5 week pennant competition for the South Gippsland District combined under 18 Team. Many thanks goes to the families and players from Wonthaggi, Meeniyan, Philip Island, Lang Lang and Leongatha Golf Clubs who participated in the Team.

With both the Settlers Run Team and the SGD Team sitting on the top of the ladder on equal points in Section 7, a win for either side today meant a place in the finals, made of the top Club from each of the 7 Divisions.
Remembering 4 of our regular team players were away playing in the Country Club Championship at Kyneton, we called on emergencies, Joel Brann from Wonthaggi GC and Nic Buckland from Meeniyan GC to bolster our numbers to make a full team.  Many thanks to those boys for stepping in at short notice.
First Match was between Alex Geyer (Wonthaggi GC) (19) and Michelle Cuddihy (SR)(5).  Michelle has not been beaten in the past 4 matches and quickly had the match in control blasting ahead with a lead of 4 up at the turn.  Alex looked gone but knuckled down, steadied and begun playing attacking golf hitting the mark and reducing the lead to one down at the end of the 17th.  Alex continued to play steadier golf and Michele hit her approach into the 18th a little long leaving enough room for Alex to finish the hole with a great putt to win and draw the match. A great comback snatching a drawn from the jaws of defeat.
Playing with this group was Joel Brann (Wonthaggi GC)(23) playing Connor Donnelly (SR) (5).  This was closely fought all day with Joel swapping the lead with Connor every few holes and going into the final hole 1 up. In a tense finish Connor recovered from a wayward drive from the 17th faiway and Joel left his chip to the green in the bunker and Connor putted out to win the 18th and force a drawn game.  This was as close to a win as it gets and a well fought out game by Joel against an extremely good opponent never the less.
The next group saw Jacob Taberner (Lang Lang GC)(29) playing Jack Harrison (SR)(12). Jack got the jump on Jacob and led the early stages 2up, but Jacob got over his early nerves and began striking his drives and approach shots and fought back to be 1 down going into the 18th.  Both players left their approach shots off the 18th green, Jacob above the hole over the back, and Jack pin high off the right fringe. Jack putted on, leaving an uphill putt of 1.5m and then Jacob send down a beautiful 15 metre putt for the win but just lipped out of the hole.  Both boys putted out for a draw on this hole but Jack held onto his lead finishing 1up. So close.
Nic Buckland (Meeniyan GC) (32) playing Spyke Mepstead (SR)(35) also played in this group. Nic was another who stepped into the team today his opponent proved to be more consistent than Nic in the early stages building an strong lead.  Spyke had the answers whenever Nic looked like challenging and eventually closed out the match 6/5.
So at this stage we have two drawn games and two losses.  But we still have two players to go.
Unfortunately for Jessica Harry (LGC) her SR opponent did not show up and she took a win from the match .  I know Jess would rather have gone around and won on her merits but we thank her for the way in which she accepted the win, and the dissappointment. One for us.
Last match was Will Christensen (Lang Lang GC)(34) playing Matt Phillips (SR)(36). They played as a pair.  Will started off by sacking his caddie (mum Kelly) because “she makes me too nervous”. So I walked around with Will.  He won the first hole with a great approach chip and one putt and then quickly gave up the second after a missed drive.  The match continued like this through the front 9 with Will recounting on most fairways the shots he played in recent matches whilst todays efforts didn’t often resemble those results.  He trailed by one going into the nineth but finshed square, saved by better putting on the greens.
On the back 9, Will consolidated early by winning the 10th and 11th before losing the 12th. Will finally got the snap hook out of his tee shots and his solid driving saw him win 13, and then 14. Matt was not going down willingly and took the par 3 -15th when Will duffed his tee shot after recounting to me his previous successful assualt on that hole.
On the 16th Matt looked likely to win after his approach landed on the fringe and Will was in the bunker. Will chipped out of the bunker then left his putt 10cm from the cup. This left Matt with two putts to win the hole but alas his yips continued and three putts saw the hole squared.
2 up two to go.  The 17th is played and after 3 shots, each were wide of the green with Will on the left and Matt on the right side.  Matt chips 15 metres and lands 1.2 metres from the hole.  Will chips onto the fringe from 5 metres and the ball stops 3 metres from the pin.  He takes out his trusty putter and sweetly sinks the putt. Matt lips out, the story of his day, and the match is over, Will wins 3/1. Will puts away his putter in the bag and turns to me and says “you know, I’ve haven’t lost this pennant season”. ….aahh, Just another day at the office.
The Team earned a hard fought draw with Settlers Run.  Who goes into the finals is anyones guess.  It may all depend on the third placed team of Kew2 who could leapfrog both of us with a win today, or there could be a three way tie if Kew2 draw their match.
A big thanks to Lang Lang GC and Ruth May for the great Course and refreshments and for keeping the Clubhouse open for us to finish presentations today.

Rnd 4: SGD Juniors draw with Waverley Wizards

2015 Golf Vic Junior Pennant Result Round 4

Sunday 15th November the South Gippsland District combined Juniors team played away at the Waverley Golf Club against the Waverley Wizards.

In his report of the match, assisting manager Mark Boler wrote:

“Well Done everyone

The score today was 3-3 so we came away with a draw.

Handicaps today were a lot closer than last week although all players were still given shots. Our opposition once again insisted on teeing off in the reverse order that is stipulated in the rules and as such, Chris Buckland (Meeniyan) was first to the tee.

Chris’s opponent Peter Vassilladis opened strongly and their match remained close all day but Chris was always a couple of holes down. Putting was the main difference where Chris had many opportunities but couldn’t buy a putt, many lipping out and the match was lost 5/4.

Charlie May (Lang Lang) had another convincing win leading all day 3 up at the turn and never looked back, playing down the middle to finish on the 15th 5/3.

Tim Boler (LGC) was our captain this week and aside from the post-match speeches, showed no nerves being 5 up at the turn then continuing his form on the next three holes to finish the match 8/6.

Oscar Harry’s (LGC) opponent Lennox Popplestone got the jump on him early then Oscar fought back to be all square after 7. However Lennox again pulled away over the next two holes being two up at the turn.  The match remained tight but Oscar couldn’t recover the margin and went down 4/3.

Jessica Harry’s (LGC) opponent Jouan Lam played consistent golf from the first tee.  Jess couldn’t match this consistency today but fought hard keeping her chances alive eventually going down 5/4.

Will Christensen (Lang Lang) had a tough day and at one point was 4 down, and by the time all other matches were completed, SGD were relying on him to level the match. Once again, all his team mates went over to watch Will and his opponent Rachel Young finish their match and  it was all square with 3 to play. Will never flinched and proceeded to win the next 2 holes for a win and to level the day for the team.

Amazing pressure on both of these young juniors to fight out a match like that. That’s probably why the Rules say the low handicappers should be bringing the field home.

Next week we have 4 players heading to Kyneton for a Country Club Championship and we wish Chris, Charlie, Tim and Oscar all the very best for that challenge.

We (SGD) will be playing Settlers Run at home at Lang Lang Golf Club and there will be some fresh faces to help out the rest of the team.

Well done today and good luck for the final round next week.”

Scores were as follows

Chris Buckland   4/5         lost to                   Peter Vassilladis

Charlie May        5/3         Defeated             Caleb Johnson

Tim Boler             8/6         Defeated             Hannah Mourant

SGD Junior Pennant prevails over Cranbourne Team

South Gippsland District defeats Cranbourne GC Junior Pennant Team.

Well Done to our juniors today!!!

The official score was 4 matches to 2, so it looked like a convincing win, however this was not the case.

Overall today we got an incredible 125 shots over our six opponents. Cranbourne were definitely a very strong team, with their first 4 players being single figure handicappers.

So before the first ball was struck off the tee, I think it is fair to say that we were a little intimidated. This was reflected over the first few holes by all our young players, but once we settled and realised that if we played our own golf, we were still a chance.

Leading from the front was Charlie May (LLGC) whom never lost control and came out with a win.

Jacob Taberner (LLGC) loves his golf and with the gift of youth where you don’t worry and just go for your shots, resulted in another win.

Tim Boler (LGC) once again had a slow start but grinded his way back into the match. Determination is his key and he produced another win for us.

Oscar Harry (LGC) had an up and down day. His opponent Rob Taylor got the jump on him but to Oscar’s credit he came back to be all square at the turn. He tried to fight it out but his opponent came home very strongly for the win.

Will Christensen (LLGC) was as consistent as ever and I always felt that he would get over the line which he did.  The three Lang Lang Juniors really used their local knowledge to push home good wins.

Jessica Harry (LGC) was our captain today and led our team with pride, her end result does not reflect how she approached her game. Although she went down to Tom Ryan, I think the best shot of the day was her second on the 9th, leaving it within 1 foot of the pin.

 Congratulations to our young team.

Well done to the parents and helpers who make it possible for them to play.

 Scores were as follows

Charlie May        4/2         Defeated             Dalton Crawford

Jacob Taberner 4/2         Defeated             Ashleigh Hall

Tim Boler             3/1         Defeated             Jean Louis

Oscar Harry         3/4         lost to                  Robert Taylor

Will Christenson 3/2        Defeated             Ainsley Range

Jessica Harry      3/4         lost to                   Tom Ryan

SGD Junior Pennant Lose Close Match to Kew GC.

KEW GC -V-SGD Junior Pennant 1/11/2015.

Despite the long journey to Kew we had another great round of hard fought golf at Kew Golf Club. Our SGD combined Junior Pennant Team had a very close outcome but went down 3.5 to 2.5.

The Team results were:
Kew                                   SGD
Callum Spear (6) defeat Alex Geyer (19)  2 down loss
Rylee Allen (10)  and Charlie May (20)  Squared.
Will Goss (11) lost to Jacob Taberner (30) 4/3 win
Michela Recinella (19) defeated Tim Boler (36) 2 down loss
Charles Kueh (22) defeated Oscar Harry (36) 4/3 loss.
Gus Falting (26) lost to Jessica Harry (45) 2 up win
The Kew Golf Course was in great condition and if you haven’t played there before, club selection and ball placement is critical in approaching a number of the greens. Play began on the 10th tee.
Alex Geyer had a close tussle with his opponent all day being down early and trailing after the first nine,  before squaring at the 6th and eventually being one down on the 8th. Alex was playing the final hole to square the match. His opponent Callum finished the 9th in great fashion with two massive shots putting him in winning position on the green and Alex lost 2 down.
It was a similar story with Charlie May and his opponent, Charlie being 3 down at one stage before pulling back and being square at the 6th with three to go and being one up by the 8th. The show down on the final hole was closely fought with Charlie’s opponent putting out to win the hole and square the match.
Jacob Taberner played the third low handicapper of the Kew team.  All three of these players were very good players, mature and tall and well built.  This was truely the story of “David and Goliath”. From the first tee shot Jacob played his own game and didn’t seemed daunted by his big hitting opponent.  Jacobs aproaches to the greens were especially good and he was quickly on top of his opponent, who became a little wayward. Jacob was five up going through nine and despite a fightback  Jacob was able to finish the match on the 6th, hole 4/3.  Well played Jacob.
Tim Boler played a steady game off the tee from the start on the 10th, later landing tee shots on two par three holes within a couple of club lengths from the pins. He led two up at the 18th but his opponent Michela wasn’t given up and returned fire on the 1st,2nd and 3rd holes to be one up. Tim again squared and the match was even going into the 8th where Tim became a litle ragged off the tee putting his ball into a hazard.  His opponent won that hole and Tim was up to squaring the match on the final hole.  A great drive saw his ball drawn by the contours down to the right beneath some trees. A great fairway hybrib landed his ball on the front of the elevated green but unfortunately it then rolled off the green by 20 metres.  His opponent landed his third on the green a metre below the cup and the hole was lost.  A great fight by Tim but losing  2 down.
Oscar Harry was a little unsettled early and wayward with his drives and his opponent quickly took control of the game playing steadier golf.  Despite settling and a  good fight back after the turn Oscar’s match finished on the 6th going down 4/3.
It was a different story with sister Jessica Harry who played very steady golf straight down the middle for the whole match.  In a tight tussle all day Jessica came to the 8th hole one up. Needing only to square the last to win the match Jessica played her third shot onto the elevated 9th green past the pin which held, leaving an 8 metre down hill putt for par. Her opponent was slightly off the green pin high and played first with his putt just missing the hole and running on a futher 2 metres.  Jessica then produced a pearl of a down hill putt leaving the ball slightly below the hole just 15 cms away and her opponent conceded defeat. A great win 2 up.
At the end of the day several matches were won or lost on Course knowledge and so a great effort by all of our SGD Juniors.
The Kew Golf Club were great hosts putting on refreshments after the game for the team and both Captains spoke well in congratulating their opponents on the spirit of the game.  Our Captain for the day was Charlie May.
Next Game: Round Three Sunday 8th November 2015.

“Unfortunately our opposition (Churchill Park) had one player that didn’t show so after the travel, Jessica Harry (LGC) did not play but we were 1 up before we started. Jessica was offered the opportunity to play the course anyway but ended up choosing shopping instead (smart Girl). Congratulations  to her in the way she handled the situation as she is still an important part of our team.

So 5 players teed off today.

First was our youngest player Will Christensen (Lang Lang GC), who pretty much dominated from start to finish winning 8 and 7. I think this is a sign of things to come with the way he approaches his golf.

Next off was Tim( Tim Boler LGC) whom had a disastrous start losing the first 5 holes. He came to the turn still 5 down then came back to level the score after 18. With no play off it was called a draw.

Oscar Harry (LGC) had a tight game throughout the first 14 holes with the lead swaying both ways but always seemed comfortable and ended up securing a 3 and 2 win.

Jacob  Taberner (Lang Lang GC)  was in control for most of the day, playing well below his handicap and early on was three up and never looked in doubt ending in a 4 and 3 victory.

Our captain for today Chris Buckland (Meeniyan GC) was up early in the round but eventually giving 11 shots was too much. After 17 holes and 1 down he had to go for it but it didn’t come off so went down by 2. If anyone has a spare 4 iron Chris would really appreciate it as I think the battle between tree and shaft ended in the predicted outcome.

So overall we should all be very proud of our juniors who came away with a 4 ½ to 1 ½ victory against a good side on their home turf.

Personally I was proud in the way they conducted themselves, their sportsmanship, honesty and friendly nature is a testament to themselves and the game of Golf.”

Great comments and a great result for the team.

Next Sunday 1st November is Round Two and the SGD Team is again playing away, this time at Kew Golf Club playing Kew 2 Junior team.
