Men’s Club Championships – Round 1

On a perfect day for golf 103 members competed in the first round of today’s Men’s Club Championships.

The best score of the day was Michael Thomas’s 76, with  Tom Sorrell just one behind on 77.   Mick is reportedly a non-starter for Round 2 so Tom is taking a handy 3 shot lead into Round 2 with Chris Leaver on 80 looking to chase him down.

B grade sees a couple of seasoned performers showing everyone how it’s done.  Bruce Hutton with 82 leads Doug Clemann on 84

C grade – Nick Shaw’s 91 has him 4 shots ahead of Patrick Bowd and David Vorwerg and a couple of capable golfers not far behind.

D grade leader Stuart Harry with 99 holds a slender lead over Lachie Thomas, Peter Hobson and Scotty Blencowe.  It’s game on for the honours in D grade.

The Senior Championship is for all players over 60 years old.  Defending champion Chris Leaver hold a slender lead after Round 1, but has a number of seasoned performers chasing him and waiting to pounce if he falters

The Junior Championship is open to all players under 21 years old.  It looks like there is no catching Ryan Thomas.  His big brother, Lachie, will give it his best shot but is long odds to win the family battle.

The R.E. Cameron Trophy is presented to the player with the best net score over the 3 rounds of the Club Championship.  Lachie Thomas is the first round leader with 68 net but he needs to back it up next week to keep ahead of a throng of players within a shot or two of the lead.

Good hitting to everyone next week.

Owen McMicking Plate

The final round of the prestigious Owen McMicking Plate was completed today.  This is awarded to the player with the lowest net score over for their best five rounds over the last 8 monthly medals.  The winner is the person who has consistently performed well in Monthly Medals rounds.

This year’s winner is David Forbes, with net scores of 68, 69, 68, 79 and 77 for a total of 361.   A worthy winner indeed.  Runner-up Rod Hopcraft with 77, 65, 77, 73, 72 (364 total) was also a star performer throughout the year and was just a putt here and there short of victory
