Hi All,
I thought you would like to know that two of our golfers were successful in this year’s South Gippsland Classic 2-day event held at Foster on Saturday 17th and Sunday 18th at Yarram. This event was the culmination of 9 days of the Classic which commenced on Saturday 10th at Mirboo North.
Bec Thomas continued her wonderful form to win both yesterday’s Women’s Stroke event at Yarram, and the overall 2-day Classic Stroke event. Congratulations Bec. She posted a 79 at Foster on Saturday and followed this up with a 76 at Yarram yesterday.
Brendan Simon also had success, being runner-up in yesterday’s B Grade Stableford event with an excellent 42 points, and also being runner up in the 2-day B Grade Classic event with a cumulative total of 75 points. Had it not been for Weshpool’s Alan Hayes’s blistering scores of 43 yesterday and 37 at Foster, Brendan would have won yesterday and also repeated his B Grade Classic win of 2 years ago.
I had the pleasure of playing with Brendan yesterday and while we were waiting to tee off on the 186m par 3 18th hole, related the story of how Dan Poynton had managed to put his shot into the clubhouse during a pennant match at Woorayl about 4 years ago. Brendan had been smashing some great drives all day and must have been keen to emulate Dan’s feat because he flushed his 2 hybrid drive on the 18th, whistling it high of the green and heading rapidly towards the clubhouse too. Had his shot not hit the South Gippsland Classic President, David Phelan, he would have done so! David recovered enough to later award Brendan his prizes!
Thanks you to the many players from our club who supported this event by playing one or more days at courses other than ours. It spreads good will among the local clubs and visitors to our region.
Peter Waters
Congratulations to Daniel Ruffin for winning the competition today with a score of 33 points.

On a somewhat challenging day for golf where the afternoon players lapped up the sunshine, 228 players from all over Australia and even a regular expat travelling from USA, played out the South Gippy Classic 4BBB at Leongatha. The course was in pristine condition considering the bashing from the storms on Wednesday, and the boys had the Course sparkling for the start. Many thanks to the major sponsors for the day which were the Esplanade Hotel Inverloch, McCartins Hotel, Leongatha, Evan Petroleum & Japara Health.

Visiting players enjoying the Course, the event and the weather about to tackle the 16th tee.
Thursday brought a little rain but was otherwise a very pleasant day for golf and the scores reflected that. A big group from Berwick Montuna Golf Club enjoyed the day and also got amongst the balls.
John McLennan took out Best Score of the Day with 41 points. For full results click here;
Due to the inclement weather there was only one Grade today and the winner was Trish Owen with 36 points.
62 players enjoyed the Par Plus format where your extra good holes get rewarded.
Thanks to Andrew Henley for sponsoring the day and telling a few good yarns in the process.
Rod Hopcraft stepped into midweek golf with the day’s best score plus +6. Good going Rod.
Fred de Bondt (+2) and Will Norden (+3) continued their red hot form to win their respective grades.
A special mention to Neale Gillin whose shot on 14 was one roll away from a coveted hole-in-one. At 10 cm from the hole he was the clear Nearest the Pin winner. The other NTP was won by Frank Gill with a beauty on 16.
The Baker’s continue their winning streak, with Ian winning in a count back with 32 points. Nice to see the sharing Ian and Coralie.
