SGD Junior Pennant Lose Close Match to Kew GC.

KEW GC -V-SGD Junior Pennant 1/11/2015.

Despite the long journey to Kew we had another great round of hard fought golf at Kew Golf Club. Our SGD combined Junior Pennant Team had a very close outcome but went down 3.5 to 2.5.

The Team results were:
Kew                                   SGD
Callum Spear (6) defeat Alex Geyer (19)  2 down loss
Rylee Allen (10)  and Charlie May (20)  Squared.
Will Goss (11) lost to Jacob Taberner (30) 4/3 win
Michela Recinella (19) defeated Tim Boler (36) 2 down loss
Charles Kueh (22) defeated Oscar Harry (36) 4/3 loss.
Gus Falting (26) lost to Jessica Harry (45) 2 up win
The Kew Golf Course was in great condition and if you haven’t played there before, club selection and ball placement is critical in approaching a number of the greens. Play began on the 10th tee.
Alex Geyer had a close tussle with his opponent all day being down early and trailing after the first nine,  before squaring at the 6th and eventually being one down on the 8th. Alex was playing the final hole to square the match. His opponent Callum finished the 9th in great fashion with two massive shots putting him in winning position on the green and Alex lost 2 down.
It was a similar story with Charlie May and his opponent, Charlie being 3 down at one stage before pulling back and being square at the 6th with three to go and being one up by the 8th. The show down on the final hole was closely fought with Charlie’s opponent putting out to win the hole and square the match.
Jacob Taberner played the third low handicapper of the Kew team.  All three of these players were very good players, mature and tall and well built.  This was truely the story of “David and Goliath”. From the first tee shot Jacob played his own game and didn’t seemed daunted by his big hitting opponent.  Jacobs aproaches to the greens were especially good and he was quickly on top of his opponent, who became a little wayward. Jacob was five up going through nine and despite a fightback  Jacob was able to finish the match on the 6th, hole 4/3.  Well played Jacob.
Tim Boler played a steady game off the tee from the start on the 10th, later landing tee shots on two par three holes within a couple of club lengths from the pins. He led two up at the 18th but his opponent Michela wasn’t given up and returned fire on the 1st,2nd and 3rd holes to be one up. Tim again squared and the match was even going into the 8th where Tim became a litle ragged off the tee putting his ball into a hazard.  His opponent won that hole and Tim was up to squaring the match on the final hole.  A great drive saw his ball drawn by the contours down to the right beneath some trees. A great fairway hybrib landed his ball on the front of the elevated green but unfortunately it then rolled off the green by 20 metres.  His opponent landed his third on the green a metre below the cup and the hole was lost.  A great fight by Tim but losing  2 down.
Oscar Harry was a little unsettled early and wayward with his drives and his opponent quickly took control of the game playing steadier golf.  Despite settling and a  good fight back after the turn Oscar’s match finished on the 6th going down 4/3.
It was a different story with sister Jessica Harry who played very steady golf straight down the middle for the whole match.  In a tight tussle all day Jessica came to the 8th hole one up. Needing only to square the last to win the match Jessica played her third shot onto the elevated 9th green past the pin which held, leaving an 8 metre down hill putt for par. Her opponent was slightly off the green pin high and played first with his putt just missing the hole and running on a futher 2 metres.  Jessica then produced a pearl of a down hill putt leaving the ball slightly below the hole just 15 cms away and her opponent conceded defeat. A great win 2 up.
At the end of the day several matches were won or lost on Course knowledge and so a great effort by all of our SGD Juniors.
The Kew Golf Club were great hosts putting on refreshments after the game for the team and both Captains spoke well in congratulating their opponents on the spirit of the game.  Our Captain for the day was Charlie May.
Next Game: Round Three Sunday 8th November 2015.

Junior Pennant Win Sunday 25 October 2015

Combined South Gippsland U18 Side wins.

This year LGC  Juniors have joined forces with other under 18 y/o players from Wonthaggi, Meeniyan and Lang Lang Golf Clubs to enter a team under the banner of South Gippsland District (SGD), in the 2015 Golf Victoria  Junior Pennant.

The competition is held over five weeks with the first round last Sunday 25 October.  Our SGD team played  away against the team from Churchill Park Golf Club at their venue. The match results were:

Churchill Park Team:                   South Gippsland District Team

Nathanniel Foo (17)       Vs           Chris Buckland (6)            2 Down (Loss)

Brandon Ong (17)            Vs           Jacob Taberner (32)        4/3         (Win)

Harrison Hall (29)            Vs           Oscar Harry (36)                3/2        (Win)

Bojan Kovacevic               Vs           Tim Boler (36)                    Square   (Half)

Jaydon Lee (36)                Vs           Will Christensen (36)      8/7          (Win)

DNP                                         Vs          Jessica Harry (43)                                Win

Our reserves for this game were:

Standby 1: Charlie May (Lang Lang GC)

Standby 2: Alex Geyer –  (Wonthaggi GC)

Recent past member Mark Boler managed the team on the day and made the following observations of the SGD Team:

“Unfortunately our opposition (Churchill Park) had one player that didn’t show so after the travel, Jessica Harry (LGC) did not play but we were 1 up before we started. Jessica was offered the opportunity to play the course anyway but ended up choosing shopping instead (smart Girl). Congratulations  to her in the way she handled the situation as she is still an important part of our team.

So 5 players teed off today.

First was our youngest player Will Christensen (Lang Lang GC), who pretty much dominated from start to finish winning 8 and 7. I think this is a sign of things to come with the way he approaches his golf.

Next off was Tim( Tim Boler LGC) whom had a disastrous start losing the first 5 holes. He came to the turn still 5 down then came back to level the score after 18. With no play off it was called a draw.

Oscar Harry (LGC) had a tight game throughout the first 14 holes with the lead swaying both ways but always seemed comfortable and ended up securing a 3 and 2 win.

Jacob  Taberner (Lang Lang GC)  was in control for most of the day, playing well below his handicap and early on was three up and never looked in doubt ending in a 4 and 3 victory.

Our captain for today Chris Buckland (Meeniyan GC) was up early in the round but eventually giving 11 shots was too much. After 17 holes and 1 down he had to go for it but it didn’t come off so went down by 2. If anyone has a spare 4 iron Chris would really appreciate it as I think the battle between tree and shaft ended in the predicted outcome.

So overall we should all be very proud of our juniors who came away with a 4 ½ to 1 ½ victory against a good side on their home turf.

Personally I was proud in the way they conducted themselves, their sportsmanship, honesty and friendly nature is a testament to themselves and the game of Golf.”

Great comments and a great result for the team.

Next Sunday 1st November is Round Two and the SGD Team is again playing away, this time at Kew Golf Club playing Kew 2 Junior team.

2015 BJS Insurance Top Gun Shootout Results – Sunday 25th October 2015

2015 BJS Insurance Top Gun winner, Peter Brownlie (Left) with runner up, Chris Leaver

2015 BJS Insurance Top Gun winner, Peter Brownlie (Left) with runner up, Chris Leaver

The 2015 BJS Insurance Top Gun Shootout was been run and won today. After nearly 6 ½ hours of closely contested golf, Peter Brownlie emerged victorious over the Club President Chris Leaver.

It’s quite a sight to witness play in the early holes with initially all 19 contestants and spectators on the first fairway. One player was eliminated on each hole, often by chip off, until the final pair played the 18th. Peter and Chris were locked together after the 18th hole and the match was decided by chip off. Peter stiffed his chip to within 30cm and Chris was unable to match it. Men’s Captain, Peter Waters, finished third.

Andy Bassett was on hand to eagerly hand over the title of “PopGun” to Keith Godridge, the first player eliminated today. Last year’s inaugural Top Gun Kevin Castwood fought manfully to defend his title but was put out on the 12th hole. Coral Gray, one of two women to make the shootout also put in a creditable performance, making life difficult for the guys until the 11th hole.

Thanks to Trevor, Ian, Andy, George and the spotters and spectators who helped make this another great day in our golfing calendar. Thanks also to Craig Hams of BJS Insurance for once again generously providing sponsorship for the event prizes.

Men’s Club Championship Results – Saturday 24th October 2015

2015 Leongatha Golf Club Men's Champions

2015 Leongatha Golf Club Men’s Champions

The 2015 Men’s Club Championships were concluded today with the third and final round played in ideal golfing conditions. Fast greens and tricky pin positions were the order of the day, with many golfers coming unstuck having reached the greens!

Ken Wardle proved his mettle, playing another solid round to scoop the pool by winning A Grade, the Club Championship and the Senior Championship with a three round score of 252. Geoff McDonald finished runner up with a creditable 256. Congratulations on a great performance Ken!

B Grade was won by the steady Peter Walsh on 257 from Kevin Castwood on 259. Peter put in three very consistent rounds with scores of 87, 84 and 86, to prove the old adage that slow and steady often wins the race!

C grade went to the old stager, Merv Stubbs. The 86 year old proved too good for his somewhat younger opponents, playing a very steady final round to win with 290, 4 shots clear of the junior Ryan Thomas. It is the 4th time in his long career that Merv has won C grade. Well done once again Merv!

D Grade, being played as a stableford event for the first time, saw Bert Borg take home the chocolates, with a fine 3 round total of 96. Runner up was John Eabry with 90 points.

The R.E. Cameron Trophy for the best 3 round nett score in the Club Championship was won by Kevin Castwood who posted a great 212 total. Peter Brownlie finished runner up with a total of 215. Obviously the snake on the track between the 17th green and the 18th tee did not put Kevin off his game too much!

Grade Winner Score Runner Up Score
A Ken Wardle 252 Geoff McDonald 256
B Peter Walsh 257 Kevin Castwood 259
C Merv Stubbs 290 Ryan Thomas 294
D Bert Borg 96 (S/F) John Eabry 90
Club Champion Ken Wardle 252 Geoff McDonald 256
Senior Champion Ken Wardle 252 Geoff McDonald 256
Junior Champion Ryan Thomas 294
R.E. Cameron Trophy Kevin Castwood 212 nett Peter Brownlie 215
