Today the South Gippsland Combined side hosted Settlers Run at Lang Lang Golf Club in the final home and away round of the Under 18 Pennant competition for Region 5.
Representative Cricket and the Golf World cup made us a little light on for “seasoned golfers” this weekend but as one door closes another opens and in steps another of Josh and John’s Junior Clinic brigade.
Today was Danny Buissink’s first 18 holes of golf since earning his handicap, and first day of pennant. He was accompanied by Miles Wrigley, a seasoned veteran of two previous pennant games, but Danny always looked as though he was at home on the Course.
There was no fairy tale today and Danny was beaten by Hayden Waters, 6/5 and Miles lost to Matt Phillips 5/3 in a great tussle. That was Hayden’s first win after starting pennant last year and going through until now without a win. That is a great example for both Danny and Miles, that a win is not that far away, you just need to stick with it.
Proud pennant player Danny Buissink after his first match, still smiling after a hard day at the office.
The team shared the other 4 matches winning two and losing two finishing with an overall loss to Settlers Run 2-4.
Charlie May lost 5/4 to Jack Harrison.
Jacob Taberner beat Dylan Sauders 5/4
Oscar Harry beat Chad Mulvogue 4/2 and
Jessica Harry lost 3/1 to Blake Pullen.
Our run is over this year, no finals this time round.
Well done to Lang Lang Golf Club for allowing us to use their Course as our home ground, as it is the closest South Gippsland Course to the metro area. Well done to Ruth May for looking after the kids each home match with a good feed and drinks.
Thanks to all the parents who caddied for their young golfers and helped managing the team when I couldn’t, and thanks to Denis Wallace for coming out today and experiencing some of Junior golf and caddying for Danny in his first game.
From the enthusiasm of the players, it looks like we can back on having another go next year.
