Round 3- U18 Golf Vic Pennant:Sunday 6/11/2016

Another fantastic effort by an under staffed  South Gippsland Junior team this week, at home at Lang Lang Golf Club against Cranbourne Golf Club.

With cricket, holidays and work taking six players we were lucky to have a new team member available for this game.  The results were excellent considering we gave away a walk over in the 6th match, being one short.

Matches played went as follows:

1- Jacob Taberner beat Tom Ryan in a tight tussle 1 up.

2- Will Christensen beat Anslie Kyle Range comfortably 5 & 4.

3- Rafferty Meyer-Heinrich beat Max Fedmowski 3 & 2

4- Jessica Harry squared her match against Patrick Carlon and

5- Miles Wrigley lost his match 10/8 to Adam Bloomberg

6- Walkover – Loss 10/8 to Tyler Foote

Well done again to Miles in only your second match.  Your learning curve is steep but you took on the challenge well. Hope to see you back next season.  Congratulations to Rafferty who was very nervous playing his first game for the team although he has been playing golf for some time.  He came through with the goods.

With only two matches left, the Team play The National at Frankston’s Long Island Course.  Tee Off is 1.00pm so please be there by 12.00 noon

The selected Team is:

1. Alex Geyer

2. Charlie May

3. Joel Bran

4. Jacob Taberner

5. Oscar Harry

6. Jessica Harry

Emergency is Will Christensen

Final of BJS Insurance Top Gun Shootout Sunday 6/11/2016

Sunday 6th of November was the final of the BJS Insurance Top Gun Shootout at LGC.  Nineteen players had recorded qualifying stableford rounds, of between 37 points and 40 points during the 12 week qualifying period.  Today’s Shootout will determine the Top Gun.

The field encountered a wet and windy start  and Bruce Cathie goes to take his second shot on the first.

At the end of the first hole, two players had wipes (0 points). Ian Murchie and Frank Gill played the first chip off from a point off the green, with the winner being the player landing the chip closest to the pin.  Unfortunately for Frank, his chipping was still astray, and Ian progressed to the second.

Pop Gun 2015 (Keith Godridge on right) commiserates with first player eliminated in 2016 (affectionately known as Pop Gun), Frank Gill

The contests continued for four hours until players broke for lunch after completing the first nine holes.  There had been some sensational golf  played already, sadly mixed with some real shockers.  There had been chip off’s on all nine holes thus far, with multiple players in most chip offs.

Start Rank Eliminated Hole out
19 GILL Frank 1
4 Smith Andrew 2
16 Bear Karen 3
17 Castwood Kevin 4
3 McLennan John 5
2 Roberts Tony 6
11 Cathie Bruce 7
18 Wallace Denis 8
9 Clemann Doug 9

At the turn, there were some big names following the quest after being knocked out, none bigger than 2014 Top Gun, Kev Castwood.

The contests continued on the back nine and heads were rolling;

8 Dalton John 11
6 Bassett Andy 12
7 Brown Rod 13
13 Hams Craig 14

Marea Maher continued to hold the Ladys’ torch high and was playing some magnificent golf.  The bookies had shortened the odds on a Maher-v-Maher final shootout, as husband Geoff was also playing solid golf.

But alas, Marea met her demons in the swale beside the 15th green and burned a precious shot when it failed to reach up onto the green and rolled back to her feet.

Marea Maher about to try putting up the hill on the 15th.

This left Geoff Maher, Jon Smith, Ian Murchie and Bruce Hutton to fight out the last three holes, beginning on the 16th.  Geoff, Ian and Bruce had safe tee shots landing each of them on or near to the green.

Jon Smith however, cringed when he watched his drive travel high right of the green into the bush.  A provisional also took a similar path and all looked lost for Jon.

A big crowd gathered to see if this was the end for Jon Smith on the 16th.

But crafty Jon found his original ball and called it unplayable, went back to the tee and played it landing more respectfully, just short of the green, chipped close, and sunk the putt to make it 5-1 point. Ian birdied the hole and Geoff parred the hole.

Bruce, just short of the green, chipped short then watched as his putt slide past the edge of the hole for a tap in 4-1 point.  The chip off said it all- Jon dodged a bullet by winning the chip off.

The 17th again looked lost for Jon when he clipped the trees on the right with his drive, leaving himself under the trees some 60 metres behind Geoff and Ian, who were well placed in the centre of the fairway.

Jon then produced a beautiful long shot which ended in front of the green some 25 metres out. Geoff ‘s 2nd landed above and behind the green to have a down hill shot to the pin.

Ian found the bunker, then produced a very good bunker shot to leave a shortish putt, which he made, to be in for par.

Geoff then played on, and watched in horror as his ball rolled past the pin and onwards towards the bunker, but fortunate enough to see it dribble left of the bunker and come to rest in the 2nd cut on the fringe. Geoff two putted from there to be in for 5-2.

John chipped up close, landing slightly below the hole and it looked “good night for Geoff”,  as Jon putted for par. His metre putt shaved the hole for a tap in 5-2.  That miss proved fatal for Jon as Geoff then won the subsequent chip off and the final shootout was set between Ian Murchie and Geoff Maher.

The beauty of the Top Gun events is that you never know who is going to win until the very last shot.  After seven and a half  hours they were finally on the 18th tee.  Ian had been involved in the chip off on the very first hole and could have been the Pop Gun if he had been eliminated.  Actually Ianplayed been in a total of 6 chip off’s during this round.

Geoff had played more solid golf, but still had played in two chip off’s so was counting his lucky stars as well.

Geoff teed off first and played a long straight drive landing 20 metres short of the “drain.  Ian then teed off and saw his drive hook into the trees on the left, short of the “track” through to the 15th.  He was in trouble.

20161106_160140

Ian’s drive landed 1 metre in from the edge of the fairway and and about 5 -10 cm’s off the ground in the branches of a native bush. ( I thought he might ask for relief from the ant nest)

But undaunted, Ian made his stance and managed to chip out onto the edge of the fairway watched by his opponent and an enthralled mob.

The final was hotting up, Geoff belted a long second shot which landed sweetly just behind the bunker with a great view of the pin.

Ian played a long third shot which again found the jungle on the inside right corner of the fairway just 25 metres from the green.   He found his ball on the very outside of of the corner under a tree covered in long grass, a very tricky shot indeed, was needed.

Things didn’t look good for Ian but he played his miraculous 4th shot which thrashed out from under the tree with grass flying everywhere as the ball appeared from nowhere, and rolled across the front and onto the green finishing 10 metres behind the pin.

Meanwhile, Geoff took out his trusty lob wedge which had worked for him all day.  After careful preparation, he played the lob which arched high into the sky towards the pin in a direct line, but sadly it landed about 50 cms short of the green, in the bunker.  Another wayward bunker shot left Geoff hitting his 5th shot, which cleared the bunker striking the top of the pin, and landing about 3 metres short of the pin.

Both players holed out in two more shots giving the win to Ian Murchie by one shot on the 18th after 8 hours of golf.  A good win to Ian who is a deserved Top Gun for 2016. A mighty fight from Geoff Maher was appreciated the crowd too.

Jon Smith, Trevor Steer, Top Gun Ian Murchie & runner up, Geoff Maher

I’m sure Geoff and the rest of the field will be back for another shot next year.

We hope to see you there too.

Well done to our Chief Marshall Trevor Steer, his assistants including Wendy Brown and Jill,  the bar crew for Lunch, and all the spectators.

Special thanks go to our Sponsor Tom Williamson and BJS Insurance for their continued support.

Yarra Yarra Golf Club v Leongatha Golf Club Ladies Challenge Friday November 4th 2016

This event was the brain child of Bec Thomas & Yarra Yarra Ladies Captain Andree Leigh. Twenty women travelled to Leongatha to play 4 BBB stableford against 20 LGC women. The day began with a delicious lunch, our thanks to Ros, Wendy Brown & others too numerous to mention. Josh & Shirley also welcomed Yarra’s Manager & Course Superintendent Peter & Ross who played golf with Josh. The beautiful annual / perpetual trophy, a silver plate etched with the Club emblems of Yarra Yarra & Leongatha. This was housed in a glass fronted wooden container. Despite the warmer weather, afternoon play & gale force winds, a great day was had by all. After play we enjoyed delicious finger food & fruit. Home ground advantage ( Yarra Yarra is quite flat)  saw Leongatha Golf Club victorious.  The gauntlet has well and truly been thrown down as Yarra Yarra play host to us next year. They are out for revenge.

The individual event for the day was won by Marg Griffiths  & Pat Pease with 43 stableford points

Runners Up were Dot Stubbs & Lianne Adamson with 39 points

The aggregate team  scores were LGC 356 points & Yarra Yarra 326 points.

It was a great day, thoroughly evident by the level of noise in the clubhouse . Congratulations to Women’s Captain Shirley Welsford for all the preparation she put into making sure the event was a success. Well done Shirley, you did our Club proud.

Star Medalist Playoff – Saturday 5th November 2016

Today was also the Star Medalist playoff for the monthly medal winners from November 2015 to October 2016. With only 3 strokes between all Monthly Medal winners as recorded during the year, the Star Medalist playoff was set to be a close tussle. The deciding factor seemed to be mother nature who unleashed a day of showers, strong gusting winds and even patches of sunshine.

In a close battle Terry Chipman is this year’s Star Medalist with a round of  92 off the stick and a handicap of 20, Terry had a nett 72, one shot clear of Jason Dennerley on nett 73 and Denis Wallace and David Forbes on nett 74.

Well done to Terry.

Today was our last day to qualify for the BJS Insurance Top Gun Shootout which is to be held this Sunday, 6th November, tee off at 09.00 am.

A likely lad who has had a number of top notch scores in recent weeks but who hadn’t entered the Top Gun event, paid his $10 entry fee today, because he had a good feeling in his bones.

Unfortunately for Paul Luck, I think it may have been arthritis, as he ended up with 26, about 11 points short of qualifying.  But what a clubman.

Better news for local farmer Antony Roberts who pulled out his best round of the qualifying season to leapfrog from position ranking 34 at 8.00am to position ranked No 1 at the end of the day, after shooting a great 40 points.

A little sad news after one of the three lady qualfiers, and perenial Top Gun finalist, Coral Gray announced she had to withdraw from the shootout as she was carrying an injury.  Well done for making the final Coral, get well soon and hope to see you again in the mix for Top Gun 2017.

Bad news for Coral but good news for Denis Wallace who was squeezed out of the final today by Tony Roberts, and now he rises again, like Phoenix, into the Top 19.

The below list is the Top Gun Shoot Out Top 19.  If your name is on the list and you can’t play in the Top Gun please let Andy Bassett know so the next ranked qualifiers can be notified in plenty of time. (1-Frank Gill, 2-Brett Windsor and 3- Alan Edney)

D & N Webster Mixed American Foursomes Tuesday 1 Nov 2016

On a gusty spring day 19 teams competed in the D & N  Webster Mixed American Foursomes event. I witnessed some great golf from the eventual joint runners up, Dot and Merv Stubbs, no better than when Dot birdied the 10th by chipping in from 100 metres out.

The winners on the day were no strangers to success as a pair, with Rebecca Wilson and Glenn Marsham once again turning on some great golf to record a nett 70.875.

It was good to see sponsors of the day, Noreen and David Webster looking so well and we all thank them again for their long support of the Club, especially the running of this event.  The winners and runners up were presented with wines and chocolates and down the line teams received boxes of chocolates, but unfortunatley, the chocolates were all gone before they got down to 90.5.

Nearest the Pins:

Tony Roberts on the 14th (1.65m )                               3 Balls

Ross McRoberts on the 16th (4.55m)                           3 balls

For those who chose not to play in the Mixed event, we also ran a Stableford event as well and some very high scores were returned. (see the seperate post).

The Golf was complemented with a glass of champagne and a lovely lunch with the running of a number of Melbourne Cup Sweeps. A noisy crowd enjoyed the running of the Cup viewed on the big screen, certainly none more than Graham (“Roudy”) Spruzen who managed to pull the winner in three of the  nine sweeps.

I can say we had a terrific day and I highly recommend that you put this day on your ‘must do’ calander, for next year.
