Men’s pennant – Final

The Men’s Pennant Finals will be held this Sunday – May 5.  Two of our teams have made the final and we invite you to come along at any time during the final to show your support to our committed and keen players.

Division 3 is playing against Lang Lang at Meeniyan at 9:45 am.

Division 5 is playing against Welshpool at Philip Island also at 9:45 am

The pointy end of the day will be at around 1:30 pm as the 7 groups come to the last few holes of their matches.   Some familiar faces looking on might just be enough to tip the balance in our favour.

Look forward to seeing your there.

Men’s Pennant Wrap – Round 6

The last round of pennant was played on Sunday.  Our Division 3 team and our Division 5 team have both qualified for Sunday’s final.

Our Division 1 team put up a great fight but got pipped 4 matches to 3 by Philip Island at Philip Island to narrowly miss a berth in the final.  Congratulations, though, to the team for representing the Club proudly and playing some excellent golf in a tough season.  Special thanks to Captain Tom Sorrell for his tireless work in making sure we fielded a strong team each week.

Division 3 will play against Lang Lang at Meeniyan this Sunday starting at 9:45.   Spectators welcome to make the trip to Menniyan  to cheer the team home.  After clobbering Meeniyan by 6 matches to 1 at Meeniyan this week the team ended the season on top of the ladder and will be hoping  to take their good form into the final.

Division 5 won all  6 of the regular season matches to be the only team across the six divisions to go through the year undefeated.  They come up against the strong Welshpool team at Philip Island in Sunday’s final starting at 9:45.  All members who want to see the stars of 2019 pennant in action are welcome to make the trip to the Island.

Good luck to both teams.

Men’s Pennant – March 31 – Round 3

Division 1 had another bye this week.  Their season proper will swing into action next Sunday when they will start a run of three consecutive matches in a strange old season.   Hopefully the team fires up and books a place in this year’s final with a few good wins.

Division 3 had an excellent win against ladder leaders Lang Lang.  By virtue of their 6 matches to 1 victory they have now taken top spot on the ladder.  Captain Chris Indian and hard-nosed matchplay exponent Bryan McCorkell  both won their 3rd consecutive match to help their team notch up their second win of the year.

Division 5 are starring.  Another win today sees them undefeated after three rounds and clear ladder leaders.  A special appearance by Mick Oliver resulting in a comprehensive 7/6 victory helped the team to victory.  Stand-in captain Garry Rotteveel has the team firing and looking good to reach this year’s final at this stage.

Men’s Pennant wrap up

The 2017 Men’s Pennant season was completed last Sunday.

The undoubted highlight of our year was in Division 2 where we won the pennant and promoted to the prestigious Division 1 for the 2018 season.  This is a wonderful achievement by all the team members and we look forward to a long stint in the premier pennant division. The leadership of captain Tom Sorrell was instrumental in our successful season, thanks Tom.  Click here for a full Division 2 end of season wrap

Division 3 completed the season with a comprehensive 6-1 victory.  A few near misses and a putt here and there that lipped the cup saw the team finish fourth by one individual game and, thus, relegated to Division 4 next year.  Nonetheless, the team were competitive all season and all players had had solid wins during the season.  New captain Brendan Simon had the team organised and ready to fire each week so thanks to Brendan for his great work.

Division 5 were in the hunt to win the pennant right up to the last putt on the last day.  In the end they finished second.   Overall they had a very good season with a number of new players proudly representing the club and looking forward to going one step better next year.     New captain Denis Wallace bought enthusiasm and pride in wearing the team colours to his team, well done Denis.

Check out the Div 5 team that fought it out for the flag in the last round.

There is an award for the individual Player of the Year based on matches played, matches won and victory margins.  This year our Division 2 newcomer and star performer, Michael O’Keefe was the winner winning all six of his matches.  Michael will be presented with his prize on Presentation night later in the year.  Division 5 father and son pair of Nick Hill and Alex Hill were 2nd and 3rd respectively both also going through the season undefeated.  Rounding out the top ten were Tom Williamson, Peter Dowling, Tom Sorell, Chris Leaver, John McLennan, Leroy Sharrock and Bryan McCorkell who all had stellar seasons.

Thank you to each and every player who represented Leongatha this year, including those willing last minute substitutes that helped us field  strong teams each week.

Junior Pennant Win Sunday 25 October 2015

Combined South Gippsland U18 Side wins.

This year LGC  Juniors have joined forces with other under 18 y/o players from Wonthaggi, Meeniyan and Lang Lang Golf Clubs to enter a team under the banner of South Gippsland District (SGD), in the 2015 Golf Victoria  Junior Pennant.

The competition is held over five weeks with the first round last Sunday 25 October.  Our SGD team played  away against the team from Churchill Park Golf Club at their venue. The match results were:

Churchill Park Team:                   South Gippsland District Team

Nathanniel Foo (17)       Vs           Chris Buckland (6)            2 Down (Loss)

Brandon Ong (17)            Vs           Jacob Taberner (32)        4/3         (Win)

Harrison Hall (29)            Vs           Oscar Harry (36)                3/2        (Win)

Bojan Kovacevic               Vs           Tim Boler (36)                    Square   (Half)

Jaydon Lee (36)                Vs           Will Christensen (36)      8/7          (Win)

DNP                                         Vs          Jessica Harry (43)                                Win

Our reserves for this game were:

Standby 1: Charlie May (Lang Lang GC)

Standby 2: Alex Geyer –  (Wonthaggi GC)

Recent past member Mark Boler managed the team on the day and made the following observations of the SGD Team:

“Unfortunately our opposition (Churchill Park) had one player that didn’t show so after the travel, Jessica Harry (LGC) did not play but we were 1 up before we started. Jessica was offered the opportunity to play the course anyway but ended up choosing shopping instead (smart Girl). Congratulations  to her in the way she handled the situation as she is still an important part of our team.

So 5 players teed off today.

First was our youngest player Will Christensen (Lang Lang GC), who pretty much dominated from start to finish winning 8 and 7. I think this is a sign of things to come with the way he approaches his golf.

Next off was Tim( Tim Boler LGC) whom had a disastrous start losing the first 5 holes. He came to the turn still 5 down then came back to level the score after 18. With no play off it was called a draw.

Oscar Harry (LGC) had a tight game throughout the first 14 holes with the lead swaying both ways but always seemed comfortable and ended up securing a 3 and 2 win.

Jacob  Taberner (Lang Lang GC)  was in control for most of the day, playing well below his handicap and early on was three up and never looked in doubt ending in a 4 and 3 victory.

Our captain for today Chris Buckland (Meeniyan GC) was up early in the round but eventually giving 11 shots was too much. After 17 holes and 1 down he had to go for it but it didn’t come off so went down by 2. If anyone has a spare 4 iron Chris would really appreciate it as I think the battle between tree and shaft ended in the predicted outcome.

So overall we should all be very proud of our juniors who came away with a 4 ½ to 1 ½ victory against a good side on their home turf.

Personally I was proud in the way they conducted themselves, their sportsmanship, honesty and friendly nature is a testament to themselves and the game of Golf.”

Great comments and a great result for the team.

Next Sunday 1st November is Round Two and the SGD Team is again playing away, this time at Kew Golf Club playing Kew 2 Junior team.
