Congratulations to Bec Thomas and Brendan Simon

Hi All,

I thought you would like to know that two of our golfers were successful in this year’s South Gippsland Classic 2-day event held at Foster on Saturday 17th  and Sunday 18th at Yarram. This event was the culmination of 9 days of the Classic which commenced on Saturday 10th at Mirboo North.

Bec Thomas continued her wonderful form to win both yesterday’s Women’s Stroke event at Yarram, and the overall 2-day Classic Stroke event. Congratulations Bec. She posted a 79 at Foster on Saturday and followed this up with a 76 at Yarram yesterday.

Brendan Simon also had success, being runner-up in yesterday’s B Grade Stableford event with an excellent 42 points, and also being runner up in the 2-day B Grade Classic event with a cumulative total of 75 points. Had it not been for Weshpool’s Alan Hayes’s blistering scores of 43 yesterday and 37 at Foster, Brendan would have won yesterday and also repeated his B Grade Classic win of 2 years ago.

I had the pleasure of playing with Brendan yesterday and while we were waiting to tee off on the 186m par 3 18th hole, related the story of how Dan Poynton had managed to put his shot into the clubhouse during a pennant match at Woorayl about 4 years ago. Brendan had been smashing some great drives all day and must have been keen to emulate Dan’s feat because he flushed his 2 hybrid drive on the 18th, whistling it high of the green and heading rapidly towards the clubhouse too. Had his shot not hit the South Gippsland Classic President, David Phelan, he would have done so! David recovered enough to later award Brendan his prizes!

Thanks you to the many players from our club who supported this event by playing one or more days at courses other than ours. It spreads good will among the local clubs and visitors to our region.

Norm Hughes had a blinder of a game today scoring 41 points and taking Best Score of the Day and both nearest the pins with .53M on the 14th and .48m on the 16th Hole. A fabulous round to say the least on our first taste of summer. For a full wrap of prize winners, click here.

2017 Junior Leongatha Open

Junior Event SAJG

Winners from the 2017 Junior Leongatha Open.

Conditions were the opposite from yesterday’s cold and windy day as players basked in a magnificent sunshine with only the slightest breeze to mention. The temperature was steady as it reached into the high teens. Drying out the course from the deluge that fell night before and the days leading up to the weekend.

Toby Walker took home the overall boys winner by three shots after firing rounds of 74 & 76.

Chelsea Dunne from Latrobe took home the overall girls title.
